Apple iPhone event. September 9th 2015.

The next Apple special event will take place on Wednesday the 9th September 2015 at 6pm UK time. You can find details of the event here and for the first time, the stream will be available to Windows devices, as long as you are using Windows 10!

It's pretty certain the new iPhone 6S will be announced, rumours state it will have a new camera which will perhaps have new lenses and maybe record in 4K video resolution.

A successor to the 3rd generation Apple TV may also be announced. It is rumoured Apple is working on its own TV 'like' service but this has been delayed until next year. Perhaps the new Apple TV will be 4K compatible and might start to form the centre/hub of Apple's HomeKit compatible devices.

iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) will be released, either at the event or very shortly afterwards.

Other than that, who knows. Apple like to keep everything under tight wraps until they actually announce it, we don't have long to wait though!

iMac 27" 3TB, hard drive replacement program.

Yesterday Apple announced a replacement program for certain 3TB hard drives fitted to 27" iMacs, sold between December 2012 and September 2013. If you believe your iMac may have one of these affected drives, you are strongly advised to check your serial number on the Apple website here.

You should make sure your iMac backup is up to date and contact Ubertechs for service. We can change the hard drive for you free of charge, if you require your data copying to the new drive, we may make a charge for this.

In 2011 Apple carried out a similar replacement program for 1TB hard drives. We saw several customers who did not get their hard drive changed and it later went on to fail.
Don’t delay, get your hard drive changed and ensure your backup is current.

Apple Watch Event - March 9th 2015

Apple recently announced that they will be holding their next special event on March the 9th, 10am PDT, which is 6PM for those in the UK. As the title of the event is 'Spring forward', it's pretty certain that this event will be announcing the release of the much anticipated Apple watch which was unveiled last year.
Of course, there could be other new goodies being unveiled at the event. Many are awaiting the release of a newly rumoured 12" MacBook Air, boasting an even thinner body with reduced ports.
What ever is announced, one thing is for sure, we will be watching the event live at http://apple.com/live

Surprising MacBook Pro Sleep Problem.

Recently we had an on going case of what started out as a MacBook Air randomly going to sleep. Two repairs later by us and another two at an Apple retail store and Apple replaced the customers MacBook Air with a shiny new MacBook Pro Retina. Guess what? The original problem was still there.

The customer came to see us about this and I could not believe that they were still experiencing the problem. Each time we took the Mac in for testing we were unable to replicate the fault whilst we had it but could never keep it for more than a day or so as the customer was desperate to use it.

For about the tenth time I watched as the customer demonstrated the problem to me (he couldn't always get it to do it when he brought it in), he moved the MacBook slightly and the screen dimmed and the unit went to sleep. After he left the Mac with us I had a good think, it must be something external to the Mac, it had to be.
Then it clicked, he was resting it on top of the leather slip case that he always carried it in, the case had two strong magnets to keep the flap closed. As the Mac was moved over these magnets it would trigger the sleep switch in the top case and send a signal to the notebook that its lid had been closed, only it wasn't!
I confirmed the problem and sure enough, this is exactly what it was. I called the customer straight back and he was of course delighted we had finally got to the bottom of it.

Below is a short video we took to demonstrate this strange sleep problem.

Warning - Check your laptop / tablet bag!

What you see below is the left side of a 2013 MacBook Air. From left to right; Magsafe 2 socket, USB 3 socket, headphone socket.
But look more closely at the USB and headphone socket and you might just catch a glimpse of something which should not be there!

Transient

We had this MacBook Air brought in to us recently as the customer could not get any USB devices or headphones to fit in the sockets.
On closer inspection we found what looked like a tiny bead lodged in the back of both sockets.
We tipped out the neoprene sleeve the laptop was brought in and our counter became covered in tiny 'beads' of silica gel!

When these protective sleeves are shipped they often contain a small bag of silica gel to help absorb any moisture, this bag had become damaged in the bottom of the sleeve and the tiny beads worked their way inside these ports.

Transient

Fortunately for the customer they had become lodged in the ports on the left side of the MacBook which houses a small input/output board. Had it been the other side it could have been much worse and may have resulted in the logic board being removed or worse still replaced!

So check your laptop / notebook / tablet / iPad bag today and remove the small packet of silica before it is too late!

iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program

Last year Apple released a 'quality' program to replace some AMD 6970M video cards in some iMacs which are affected by a problem with the cards. Yesterday we changed one of these cards for a customer and thought we should remind people that this program is in place and runs for 3 years from the date of purchase of your iMac.

See the Apple article here to see if your iMac may be affected.

Above you can see the iMac with its logic board removed and the graphics cards at the bottom of the photo. All our work is carried out on ESD protected benches which are regularly tested. Contact Ubertechs today if you think your iMac may need repair.

We don't see many of these!

We had this 'old' iMac G4 brought in today for a spruce up, RAM etc. Don't see too many of these at our workshop, I think the last one we repaired was 4 years ago or more.

They are beautifully engineered, the display sits on a movable arm and unlike all the modern iMacs, allows you to reposition both the height and angle of the display. It dates back to 2003 and comes complete with built in 56k dial-up modem!

Cracked MacBook Pro Retina Display.

As you can see from the photo below this MacBook Pro Retina has had a small bump to one of the rear corners. Due to the tolerances these displays are manufactured to, it has cracked the Retina LCD display behind. It has not damaged the glass cover but will now require a complete new display housing/screen to repair this damage.

Below you can see the damage as seen when the MacBook is powered up.

MacBook Air SSD replacement program.

MBA_11inch_MtnLion_WW_SCREEN.jpg

Apple have today released a replacement program for certain MacBook Air's from 2012 which have been identified as having an SSD drive which is prone to failure.
Models affected are Mid 2012 MacBook Air 11" and 13" manufactured between June 2012 and June 2013. A further test is required to check if your SSD will need replacing, this test is done via the MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware update v1.1. The update will direct you to an Apple web page giving you  options if your drive needs to be replaced.
64B and 128GB drives are affected.

If you are affected and in the Lancaster/Lakes area then Ubertechs Ltd are fully equipped to replace your SSD.
