Keeping an up to date backup of the information on your computer is probably one of the most important things you can do. Sadly it's also one of the most neglected things that many computer owners do.
A backup means having your files copied to at least two different physical locations. Moving your files on to an external hard drive is not a backup, you must keep the original files on the internal hard drive of your computer too.
As well as keeping an up to date copy of your files on an external hard drive, we recommend you use an online backup service too. This means that should you loose your external hard drive, or worse still you have your computer and external drive stolen, you still have a copy of your files. We recommend using the Backblaze service to take care of your online backup. The service is very affordable and unlike many online backup services it is unlimited which means you will not be charged any extra for your backups, no matter how much you backup. Local Backups. As well as using an online backup service, you might want to keep a local copy of your files on an external hard drive or network attached storage device. If you are using a Mac with OS X 10.5 or above, then you have one of the simplest backup systems built right in! Time Machine allows you to plug in an external disk drive and begin backing up your files in a matter of minutes. The setup is extremely simple and the backup process runs in the background.
For windows machines with Windows Vista and above, you have a simple backup program built in called Backup and Restore. This allows you to keep a backup of your important documents on an external hard drive.
